Oils:
- Safflower oil - good substitute for canola in baking (make sure it is organic, less likely to be GMed)
- Coconut oil - the fave! (don't eat too much because it's high in saturated fat, but you know the good kind)
- Hemp oil - this is our favourite because it contains omega 3, 6, AND 9 fatty acids
- Flaxseed oil
- Good quality olive oil - best used in salad dressings or minimally heated (it has a low smoking point)
- Grapeseed oil - substitute for canola oil in baking also use in stir frys
- Avocado oil - has an incredibly high smoking point, use for frying
- Rice Bran Oil - also has a very high smoke point, use for frying
- Any oil derived from organic seeds or nuts excluding soy, sunflower and peanuts unless you can find verified GMO free
- Tempeh (We know this contains soy, but we have found an Organic, GMO free, Gluten-free, local (from where we live), family owned Tempeh company: Henry's Gourmet Tempeh, you can buy it online as well I believe)
Sweeteners:
- Maple syrup - All Canadian super sweetener! :)
- Brown Rice Syrup - low GI and great in granola
- Sucanat - the BEST in cookies
- Coconut Sugar (lower glycemic index than honey at 35)
- Coconut Nectar - 35 GI, tastes a bit fruity too
- Stevia - it is one of the only alkalizing sweeteners, and you only need a little bit for a big sweet taste, and it's a herb!
- Date Sugar - made from dehydrating and grounding dates
- Molasses - rich in minerals and nutrients
Milks
- Almond milk - fave! especially if you make your own
- Hemp milk
- Coconut milk - leave in the fridge overnight and it thickens up :)
- Any organic nut or seed derived milk, make it yourself!
Thickening Agents
- Arrowroot Flour - flour made from the dehydrated, starchy root of arrow plant
- Agar Agar Flakes - gelatinous substance found in cell walls of Agarophyte Red Algae
- Chia Gel - I believe this to be the most natural thickening agent, there is hardly any processing involved, use in smoothies to make them more "substantial")
- Psyllium husk gel - It gets super thick and is a superb source of fibre.
- Irish Moss Paste
If you are aware of any of these ingredients to be sketchy, please let us know in comments! We are open to any information you may have.
